Public Information Open House

Your Union City is progressing.  Join our team as we provide information and answer questions about upcoming capital projects. The following is a list of the projects that we will be highlighting. 

Highpoint Road Pedestrian Bridge and Sidewalk
This federally funded project includes installing a pedestrian bridge on Highpoint Road over Deep Creek and the construction of sidewalks immediately adjacent to the bridge. Note: This Bridge will look identical to the bridge on Flat Shoals Road near Mallory Drive.

Union City Pedestrian System Phase I
This project will include construction of 5 foot sidewalks on Baker Street, College Street, Union Street, Goodson Street and Dodson Road in Union City, Georgia. The boundaries of this project are as follows: Baker Street from Jonesboro Road to College Street; College Street from Gresham Street to Watson Street; Union Street from Goodson Street to 200 feet east of Summer Brooke Court; Goodson Street from Union Street to Flat Shoals Road and Dodson Road from Gullatt Elementary School north to the railroad track.

2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
This project will consist of a new 8-inch water line along Haven Street and McKinley Avenue to replace an existing 2 inch water main along the route. Connections to existing 6 inch water mains on Gresham Street and Westbrook Place will complete the looped water line improvement. The portion of the existing 2 inch water main on McKinley Avenue that is west of the Haven Street intersection can remain in place since it provides ample service for the two or three residences on this dead end section of street.

Local Maintenance Improvement Grant (LMIG)
This resurfacing project is the result of the latest GDOT initiative that replaced the Local Assistance Road Program (LARP). It will consist of resurfacing 34,902 square feet of pavement on Pine Valley Drive and 3,300 square feet of pavement on Jamaica Court.

Union City Pedestrian System Phase II
Lester Road: The proposed improvements along the east side of Lester Road include installation of 75 feet of sidewalk varying in width from 5’ to 8’6’ to fill in the gap between the existing sidewalks at the crossing of Broadnax Creek. No modifications to the existing lane widths or configurations are proposed.
US 29/Roosevelt Hwy: The proposed improvements extend along the southeast side of Highway 29/Roosevelt Highway from S.R. 138 to Dixie Lake Road for approximately 5,800 lf. The current section on the south side of Roosevelt Highway has few sections of curb and gutter and no sidewalk. Drainage along this section of Roosevelt will be accommodated by installing flumes or catch basins as appropriate. The proposed improvements along this section of US 29/Roosevelt Hwy will include a 2’ wide grass strip and 5’ wide concrete sidewalk. Minor intersection improvements may be necessary at Westbrook Rd, Gresham St and Main Street to maintain ADA accessible pedestrian walkways (2%). No medications to existing lane widths or configurations are proposed.
SR 138/Beverly Engram Pkwy: The proposed improvements along SR138/ Beverly Engram Pkwy include installation of a five foot sidewalk on the south side of the road for approximately 3,200 feet beginning at the Fairburn/Union City limit at the intersection of Jonesboro Road and SR 138 and extending to the existing 5’ sidewalk at the western property corner of the Wyndsor Forest Apartments. The proposed improvements along the south side of SR 138/Beverly Engram Pkwy will include a 10’ paved shoulder and a 3-6’ grass strip and 5’ wide concrete sidewalk. Drainage improvements along this section of SR 138 will be accommodated by installing drainage flumes and catch basins as appropriate.

MARTA
Roosevelt Highway at SR 138/Beverly Ingram Parkway: This project will improve the east (Union City) side of the intersection. A new bus shelter pad will be installed on the north and south side Roosevelt Highway. The new bus shelters will be installed by MARTA. An eastbound bus pull-out lane will be added as well. The cross walk across Roosevelt Highway will be replaced with a brickprint crosswalk and new corner plazas will be added to the northeast and southeast quadrants of the intersection. These plazas will consist of GDOT approved handicap ramps, concrete pavers in decorative patterns and seat height dry stacked stone decorative walls with Union City emblazoned on the wall face. A new gateway structure on the eastbound shoulder area will denote the entrance into Union City limits.
Roosevelt Highway at Gresham Street: This project will improve all four legs of the intersection. The existing traffic signal will be replaced with a decorative mast arm traffic signal. GDOT approved handicap ramps and new pedestrian brick-print crosswalks and triangular pedestrian refuge islands will be added. Corner plazas will be added to the southeast and southwest quadrants of the intersection. These plazas will consist of GDOT approved handicap ramps, concrete pavers in decorative patterns and seat height dry stacked stone decorative walls with Union City emblazoned on the wall face. Sidewalk connection and GDOT approved handicap ramps will be installed along Gresham Street on the south side of the railroad crossing.
Roosevelt Highway at Highpoint Road: This project will improve all four legs of the intersection. The existing traffic signal will be replaced with a decorative mast arm traffic signal. GDOT approved handicap ramps and new pedestrian brick-print crosswalks and a triangular pedestrian refuge island will be added. A corner plaza will be added in the southwest quadrant of the intersection. This plaza will consist of GDOT approved handicap ramps, concrete pavers in decorative patterns and seat height dry stacked stone decorative walls with Union City emblazoned on the wall face. A new bus shelter pad will be installed in the southwest quadrant along Roosevelt Highway. The new bus shelter will be installed by MARTA.

Shannon Parkway Storm Water Improvements
The project begins on Shannon Parkway just north of Jonesboro Road and continues north along the east shoulder, to the existing pipe in front of the Microtel. The improvements include the replacement or installation of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) to replace corroded/failing corrugated metal pipe (CMP). As a result of the removal of the failing pipe and the installation of the new pipe, the existing sidewalk will be removed. Sidewalk replacement is proposed in the coordinating project, “Shannon Parkway CMAQ Sidewalk”. This project is to be constructed simultaneously with the “Shannon Parkway CMAQ Sidewalk”


Shannon Parkway Sidewalk – Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Project (CMAQ)
The project begins on Shannon Parkway just north of Jonesboro Road and continues north along the east shoulder, to existing sidewalk in front of the Microtel. An additional 200 foot long stretch of sidewalk is proposed north of Shannon Boulevard to provide full connectivity along Shannon Parkway. The existing sidewalk is required to be demolished in order to install the pipe for the coordinating project “Shannon Parkway Stormwater Improvements”. As a result, this corridor will have no sidewalk when this project begins. The gap segment north of Shannon Boulevard does not have sidewalk.
