Public Education and awareness is a top priority of the Police Department. Specially trained officers are assigned to the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Unit. Together with other organizations, the COPS Unit provides programs to enhance personal safety, teach proactive crime-reduction strategies, and help community members develop a partnership that improves safety and order.

The COPS Unit has numerous programs designed to inform the public of current crime trends and how to eliminate criminal opportunities through education and awareness. Presentations on crime prevention are available to citizen groups including local schools, businesses, church, homeowner associations, Boy/Girl Scout groups, etc… and include programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Police Department tours, Detention Facility tours, K-9 presentations, home/business security surveys, weather safety, and disaster planning.
