Special Operations
The Special Operations Division is the investigative component of the Police Department. Investigators assigned to this division are primarily responsible for investigating both felony and misdemeanor cases. When not responding to crime scenes or following leads, detectives prepare investigative reports for use in court. The Division uses innovative technology and sound investigative techniques in an effort to solve cases. Cases are assigned to investigators who are dedicated to providing victims with answers and keeping crime rates low. Union City investigators investigate crimes ranging from misdemeanor theft to homicide. Training and education is a priority for these investigators as they constantly strive to keep abreast of the latest techniques and available resources to help them conclude cases. The Division is staffed Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM.
The Crime Scene Investigations Unit is comprised of full-time, certified police officers designated as Criminalists. The unit is a sub-division of the Special Operations Division of the Department. The crime scene investigators are responsible for detecting, documenting, collecting, processing and preserving evidence from crime scenes. Each investigator is trained in multiple disciplines including fingerprint comparison, crime scene processing, blood stain analysis, footwear comparison, death investigation, DNA collection, and a vast amount of other training utilizing state of the art equipment. Personnel assigned to the unit are also certified through the State of Georgia as marijuana examiners and can testify as expert witnesses in court.
